The year 1986

Cantoria

In 1986 James R. Von Ehr, founder of Altsys Corporation, developed Fontographer, a program that allowed users to create PostScript fonts on the Macintosh for a fraction of the cost of existing tools, leading to what was called "the democratization of type design".

The most popular font released in 1986 was Cantoria, designed by Ron Carpenter.
