The year 1986
In 1986 James R. Von Ehr, founder of Altsys Corporation, developed Fontographer, a program that allowed users to create PostScript fonts on the Macintosh for a fraction of the cost of existing tools, leading to what was called "the democratization of type design".
The most popular font released in 1986 was Hiroshige, designed by Cynthia Hollandsworth Batty and AlphaOmega Typography.
