Agfa-Gevaert, the German manufacturer of photographic film, chemicals, and paper, diversified into typography in 1982 when it acquired an interest in the American phototypesetter company Compugraphic Corporation.
It subsequently merged with Compugraphic Corporation to form Agfa-Compugraphic, and in 1998 acquired Monotype to form Agfa-Monotype Corporation. In 2001 the company acquired International Typeface Corporation.
In 2004 Agfa-Monotype Corporation was acquired from Agfa Corporation by TA Associates, and changed its name to Monotype Imaging Inc. Since then it has made a series of acquisitions, including Linotype in October 2006, Ascender Corp in December 2010, Bitstream in March 2012, and FontFont in July 2014.
Currently based in Wilmington, Massachusetts, USA, Monotype Imaging continues to develop one of the world's largest typeface collections.
