Werner Schneider

Born in Marburg an der Lahn, Germany, Werner Schneider studied at the School of Applied Arts in Wiesbaden, under Professor Friedrich Poppl from 1954 until 1958. He has spent almost 40 years as a teacher at his old school, now the University of Applied Arts. His specialist teaching area is communication design, with an emphasis on type and typography.

He works in corporate and type design, as well as type and book graphics. His work has won him numerous awards, from associations and institutes such as the Type Directors Club, Art Directors Club, and the Biennale of Graphic Design in BrĂ¼nn. His typeface Schneider-Antiqua won a gold medal.

His artwork is on display around the world, in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the Books and Arts Special Collection at the San Francisco Library, the Klingspor Museum in Offenbach, Germany and the Academy of Arts, Berlin. He has also had exhibitions across Europe, north America and Asia.

In 2002, he collaborated with Helmut Ness to create Vialog.Vialog.
