Karl-Heinz Lange

Born in Riesenkirch, West Prussia, in 1929, Karl-Heinz Lange graduated from high school and then studied at the Werkkunstschule until 1951. Among his lecturers there was Professor Post. He continued his education at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig.

He has worked as a lecturer in typography and commercial arts and as the artistic director at the Berlin publishing house, Henschel Verlag. Until 1994, he was the Professor of Type and typography at the Fachschule für Werbung und Gestaltung (Institute for advertising and design). Between 2005 and 2007, he taught at the Fachhochschule Magdeburg/Stendal.

In 1984 he was awarded the Silver Medal for his Publica font at the Biannual of Graphic Design in Brno.

Among his type designs is Minima, which he produced in response to Typoart's request for help designing a telephone book typeface. He has also redesigned Arno Drescher's Super-Grotesk and Herbert Tehannhaeuser's newspaper face, Magna, for use on digital typesetters. In collaboration with Elsner+Flake he has developed calligraphic versions of the Viabella family.
