Information about the typeface designer Helmut Matheis and his fonts.
Born in Speyer, Germany in 1917, Helmut Matheis studied under Professor E von Dombrowski at the Staatsschule für angewandte Künste (state school of applied arts) in Munich between 1942 and 1945. After the Second World War, he continued his education at the Hochschule der bildenden Künste, finishing his studies in 1947.
He worked as freelance graphic designer with various agencies during the 1950s in both Munich and Starnberg. During the 1960s, he worked with Ludwig & Mayer. His Primadona typeface has been revived and expanded as Silk Script.
Since 1974, he has lived in Bernau on the Chiemsee, Germany.
