Information about the typeface designer Merle Scholtz and her fonts.
Merle Scholtz was born in 1947 in Durban, South Africa. After a number of years spent designing children's fashions, Merle turned to graphic design, specializing in African and Indian ethnic patterns and logos. Her work with ethnic patterns began as a result of her fascination with, and collection of, ethnic African masks and beadwork.
Based in Durban, South Africa, surrounded by a multitude of cultures, (particularly Zulu and Indian), she has made use of the rich tapestry of “African and Indian” designs to enhance the work produced by the design company run by Anton Scholtz and herself.
This led to the design of pattern fonts, based on the traditional designs of the African and Indian people.
