Born in 1977, he lives and works in Besançon, in the east of France. He studied in the School of Fine Arts in Besançon, and in Madrid, where he started in 1999 the typeface Garaje, based on Spanish vernacular garage signage.
After graduating in 2001, he joined the Atelier National de Recherche Typographique (ANRT, National Institute for Typographic Research) where he started the Minuscule project. Since then, he shares his time between his freelance designer activity, typeface design, and teaching. He teaches graphic and typographic design in the École des beaux-arts de Besançon (School of fine Arts) and in the École Supérieure d'Art et de Design d'Amiens (Art and Design High School).
In 2005, he received the Certificate of Excellence in Type Design by the Type Directors Club New-York, in the TDC2 typeface design competition (category text). Minuscule is also part of Typographica's Favourite Typefaces of 2007, selected by Erik Spiekermann. In 2006, Thomas Huot-Marchand was selected for the prestigious Académie de France à Rome (French Academy), Villa Medici, where he spent one year and got married.
