Sofie Beier is a type designer, researcher and lecturer employed at The Danish Design School. She holds a PhD from the Royal College of Art in London, on the subject of typeface familiarity and its relation to legibility.
In her academic research Sofie Beier investigates the factors in letterforms that can improve the legibility of a typeface in a given context. Through experimental studies where the reader is exposed to alternative versions of a typeface or letter, she studies how tested variables affect the reading experience. The aim of the research is to reach a better understanding of the influence shapes in type design has on reading.
