Born in Karlsruhe, Germany in 1966, Thomas Mettendorf finished his studies in 1992. His first job was with an advertising agency, but he subsequently spent five years working freelance for various agencies and studios. In 1998 he won second place in a Garagefonts competition with his typeface Café Retro. He later worked for the newly founded Inka magazine, developing fonts and designing layouts.
A musician as well as a designer, he has been in numerous bands, and was co-founder in 1996 of Wilde Welt. Since 2007, he has concentrated on his music, turning his back on graphic and type design. However, he is still an editor with Slated, the typographic magazine from Magma Brand Design. He has two children.
