Arthur Vanson

Arthur Vanson was born during the summer of 1948 in the town of Chesham, England. His father was a signwriter, trading as Bucks Signs. Tagging along to work at weekends and holidays, he gradually learned the skills of the trade, so was able to carry on the business only a year after leaving school at fifteen, when his father died. He continues trading as Bucks Signs while, always taking the opportunity for adventures: scrap metal worker, fireman, race mechanic, sonar operator on the Loch Ness and Morar Project and lately, lock keeper on the River Thames.

When computers started to take over the sign trade, he digitised his hand lettering styles so that his work retained the animation and flow of brush lettering. Letterforms designed for print rarely translate well to signwork.
