Born in Indianapolis, USA, Stephen Rapp was educated at Saint Cloud School of Design between 1975 and 1977. He began studying calligraphy in 1988. What started as a hobby became a passion, and he was soon working on a wide variety of projects, from CD covers to movie sets.
He has worked as an art director for Hass Automation (1999-2001) and Cardservice International (1995-96). Since 2000, he has been a member of the lettering team at the American Greetings Corporation. As well as working as an art director and graphic designer, he also runs his own business RAPPdesign. It forms a base for the various independent projects that he undertakes; he is commissioned to produce advertisements, logos and brand identities.
His work has been published in Letter Arts Review and the Type Directors Club, Typography 30. In 1997, he received the Harmann Zapf Scholarship award.
