Pepe Gimeno
Born in Valencia, 1951. Graduated in Advertising Drawing at Valencia School of Applied Arts and Crafts in 1969. From 1970 to 1986 he worked at different advertising companies, either freelance or as part of the staff of some of these; from 1982 to 1986 he worked as Art Director at the Collectiu Voramar.
In 1987 he set up on his own specializing in Graphic Communication, doing Corporate Graphic Identity projects, Signposting, and Design of Publications. From 1989 to 1992 he was President of Valencia Professional Designers‚ Association. From 1990 and until 1995 he formed part, as a partner, of Gimeno y Lavernia, S. L.. From 1993 to 1996 he gave classes in graphic design at the C.E.U. San Pablo University, Valencia.
At present he does his professional work at the Pepe Gimeno Proyecto Gráfico Limited Company. In 1999, Experimenta Ediciones de Diseño published the monograph "Pepe Gimeno. 25 years of Graphic Design". In 2002 he published his own "Cali Typography?", printed by La Imprenta-Comunicación Gráfica.
Distinctions and Awards His work has appeared in publications such as Graphis Poster '94 and '97, Graphis Design '95 and 2000, Print European Design '96, '97, '98, '99 and 2000, Nuevo Diseño Español by Guy Julier, Creativity 27, 28 and 29, 77th Art Directors Annual, Brochure Design 5 and 6, Logo Made in Spain, Then is Now and 47 Type Directors Club-Typography 22; in magazines such as Axis, On, Creativity News, Interni, La Maison Marie Claire, Visual, Experimenta, Diseño Interior, Abitare, Box and Novum gebrauchsgraphik. He has taken part in exhibitions such as "Design in Spain", "Casa Barcelona", "DOM Project" at Expo '92, "This is not a chair", "Show the flag", "Carmen Project" (Habitare il Tempo, Verona Fair), "20 Valencian Designers" at the IVAM, "Barbie, 40 years of Fancy" (Mattel), "Nine proposals for a director's chair", "Exquisite Projects: A logo for 2000" and "Signs of the century" at the Reina Sofía Museum. He has been awarded such prizes as the Design Excellence Award of America's Graphic Design Magazine (1996, 1997 and 1998), Design Excellence of the Graphic Magazine (1995 and 1997) and Typographic Excellence Certificate 2001 by the Type Directors Club of New York.
