Google launched their Web Fonts service in May 2010 which provides free hosting of a range of fonts for any website that chooses to use them. To support the service Google has commissioned several hundred free fonts, and these can also be downloaded free for desktop use.
By making web fonts more freely available Google encourages web sites to use searchable text rather than text rendered into an image, which improves the amount of information available to search engines. It has also undeniably improved the appearance and design of many web sites across the web. However, some users have raised security concerns because the service potentially gives Google information about the number of accesses to each page using their web fonts.
