Fernando Mello
Originally from São Paulo, Brazil, Fernando Mello went to the UK to study the MA in Typeface Design at the University of Reading in
2006-2007. He then moved to London and soon joined Fontsmith in the summer of 2008. His background in multiple visual areas - namely architecture, typography, graphic design and illustration - guides his search for creating innovative and original, yet functional and well-constructed typefaces.
He is a dedicated collector of dry-transfer sheets, books, toys, clothes, vinyls, analogue synthesizers and whatever else which may suggest a link to the 70s/80s, a time "where personal computers weren't around and visual experimentation was a bit less restrictive and perhaps happening in a more authentic way", in his own words.
Fernando believes the most effective solutions reside in simple, authentic, human ideas. He has been an important element in several Fontsmith projects, including the successful fonts FS Joey and FS Jack, as well as many recent custom font jobs.
