Josef Albers (1888-1976)

Born in Westphalia in Germany. As a very young man he got involved with the Bauhaus movement. In his typography, he sought to reduce type to a combination of geometric shapes. This was particularly effective for posters and it is this style for which he is remembered.

He taught at the Bauhaus until it closed in 1933 due to pressure from the Nazis, whence he emigrated to America. There he continued to spread the Bauhaus philosophy.
