Born in the United States in 1965, Thomas Phinney was largely raised in Edmonton, Canada. At undergraduate level, he studied psychology and political science, and he has an MBA from University College Berkeley.. Subsequently, he almost became a journalist, but decided instead to pursue his passion for typography.
He studied typography and printing at the Rochester Institute of Technology, getting his MS in 1997. In the same year he joined the Adobe staff in San Jose. He helped to define Adobe's approach to implementing and testing OpenType fonts.
From 1997-2008 he worked in type at Adobe, lastly as product manager for fonts and global typography in Seattle. He is now senior product manager for font solutions at Extensis.
He is also treasurer of ATypI and acts as an expert witness on forged documentation in court. His typeface Hypatia Sans is an Adobe Original.
