Born in Austria in 1927, Othmar Motter graduated with honours from a Viennesse graphic arts academy in 1950. The following year he founded the Vorarlberger Graphikstudio with Hans Kaiser and Sylvester Licka in Hard am Bodensee. The work was varied, but his specialism was poster designer, and it won him a number of awards.
In the late 1960s he began to concentrate on logos, corporate design, and type design. However during the 1970s he stopped designing fonts. His headline fonts, Motter Femina and Ombra, produced for Berthold and Letraset, were among his last designs for almost 30 years. He returned to typography in the 1990s. Since then he has been an active type designer.
