Gudrun Zapf von Hesse

Born in Schwerin, Germany in 1918, Zapf von Hesse is largely a self-taught lettering artist. She began her career studying book-binding under Otto Dorfner at Weimar and later with Johannes Boehland. She is married to Hermann Zapf.

Both she and her husband are considered to have embraced the changes in printing and foundry technology over the second half of the last century. When film type was a new technology, they put much effort into understanding and designing for this new technology. As digital type developed, they were there to design type, solve technical problems with engineers, and provide a standard of typographic excellence for the next generation of designers.
