Frederic Warde (1894-1939)

Warde was born in Minnesota and is chiefly known for his book designs. He is part of a generation of American typographers that produced the American "revival of printing". He is much better known for marrying Beatrice, who upstaged him by becoming the better known of the couple.

He was Director of Printing at Princeton University Press at the time of their meeting and she was an assistant librarian. They then sailed off to Europe, where they settled eventually in Europe and devoted themselves to the written word. His most famous font was a revival of an old chancery italic font that was designed in 1925; he named it Arrighi, after its Roman Renaissance originator. The font was a success, the marriage less so. Warde separated from Beatrice and headed home where he lost his assets in the Stock Market crash of 1929.
