William Addison Dwiggins (1880-1956)
Possibly America's most truly modern type designer, Dwiggins was an artist, book-designer, costume-designer, playwright, sculptor, writer, and calligrapher. Born in Ohio, he only began designing types at the age of 44.
He did the design for H. G. Wells Time Machine in 1931. He spent his working life in a village near Boston. There he built a marionette theatre in his garden so he could indulge in his passion for theatre.
His most famous types are Caledonia and Electra.
"No trick stuff. Novelty is not wanted but warmth is."
