Roger Excoffon (1910-1983)
Excoffon was a French graphic designer whose flamboyant typefaces were to shake up French advertising. Born in Marseilles, he went to Paris to study painting. He then became design director of a small type foundry in Marseilles, the Fonderie Olive.
His Antique Olive family of types is regarded as his masterpiece. His exuberant typefaces - Calypso, Choc, and others - became symbolic of the stylish modernity and exuberance of post-war nouvelle vague France, and a benchmark for French graphic design.
