J. H. Mason (1875-1951)

Mason was an auto-didact who left school at 13 to work as a compositor. He rose to become the editor of the highly influential journal The Imprint, which he founded with Gerard Meynell, Edward Johnston and others.

Mason designed a typeface for use in the journal, called Imprint Old Face. It was the first type to be designed specifically for machine composition and was to prove that new technology could be just as good as the traditional hand-composed type.
