James Lyles was born in Michigan City, Indiana, USA in 1955. He graduated in 1979 from Valparaiso University (BSFA), a small Lutheran school in Indiana. Jim and his wife Lisa, also a fledgling artist, moved to New York City in 1980 where Jim studied printmaking and drawing at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, the School of the Visual Arts and the Arts Student League in NYC.
For income, Jim landed a job at the NYC offices of Mergenthaler Linotype as an apprentice letter drawer, where he worked until 1985, when he and his wife moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts and he joined Bitstream, where he continues to work today.
Jim finally gave up on his dream to be a fine artist but still draws and pull prints for his own enjoyment. He and his wife have one daughter Irina, 10, whom they adopted from Khazakstan in 1994.
