You might say ideals should beat pragmatism-- but all the ideals of “perfect pop” we have started out as hopes and hustles. The 60s girl groups and janglers that indie pop drew on were going for effectiveness, and it happened that beauty worked. The appeal of pop, for me, is that its definition of effective keeps changing-- yes, conservatism brings return, but so does novelty. The constant dance of “what's great” and “what works” is what keeps me a pop fan: It’s as close as art comes to sport.

Club cultures were a way out of the dilemma – a shortcut to the future, as its enthusiasts tended to believe. While the traditional “alternative” cultures expressed their relation to authority in negative terms, club cultures adopted a rhetoric that endowed their followers with a sense of agency and ownership of their prospects. With the use of an empowering, entrepreneurial language, this new spirit was instilled and a new set of attitudes was embodied. At the core of this shift was a radical moment of rethinking the position of the subcultur-alist vis-a-vis authority, which was no longer seen, in the pre-Foucauldian manner, as an external obstacle to the freedom of self-expression.

He understood hip-hop as an extension of folk music rather than a betrayal of it – the way rap spun meaningful, entertaining stories out of everyday life using equipment anyone could get their hands on – felt insightful, even subversive, especially at a time when we were starting to digest the reality that grunge was just classic rock after all – the same quest for glory, the same macho, self-serious dream. I’ve always taken the word “pop” as its literal translation-- it’s accessible, and that’s why it’s popular. For a while, the attitude was “radio sucks,” but pop isn’t shunned anymore. There’s a lot of things that are pop-influenced, but I wouldn’t call them pop-- I know Grizzly Bear call themselves pop, but they’re more psychedelic folk-based with pop influences. A lot of my previous material was referencing more obscure artists, but this one was an experiment to see what would happen if I made a really poppy album. I already know I’m not going to make an album like this again.

Definition of Tanger Serif falls between a New Transitional and Egyptienne styles. It works smoothly in long reading text and reveals unique details in large sizes. The complete family consists of 48 typefaces in eight weights and three widths. Italics follow a cursive letter constructions, which results an extremely easy flowing texture in text.
