DISCOURSE

Designed by Dave Bailey, Discourse is a display, display slab and western font family. This typeface has twenty-four styles and was published by Delve Fonts.

Discourse is a type superfamily comprised of 24 fonts that was first visualized when designer Dave Bailey heard a preview of the song “Dust and Buried Bones: A Western Fantasy” by Opiate Eyes. The title alone projected vivid ephemeral images of gritty western films and the Oregon Trail.

Although Discourse references classic reverse-contrast wood type associated with the era of the Wild West, it re-interprets conventional forms into something with a more unique and distinctly neo-modern feel.

The three heavy weights of Discourse concentrate on creating the highest visual impact with the darkest color possible and tight spacing. The thick horizontal strokes create strong word shapes and the consistent color and rhythm creates a pleasantly even block of text.
The three light weights are the opposite extreme, completely shedding the weight of the horizontal strokes that characterizes the heavy weights.

Every one of the Light and Heavy weights have their own shadow, outline and fill versions that can be layered for a dazzling chromatic effect.
