Rector In Use
- Heimildin (“The Source”) is an Icelandic media company committed to use investigative journalism to provide the public with access to independent information. The firm was founded in 2023 following the merger of Stundar and Kjarnan. It publishes a daily news website and a biweekly printed newspaper that’s also named Heimildin. The new look was conceived by Jón Ingi Stefánsson, co-founder and former design director of Stundar. For the logo/nameplate, Stefánsson chose the Bold weight of Rector. This lapidary serif was designed by Hrvoje Živčić, and won him a Certificate of Typographic Excellence by the TDC. With its sharp details – like the wedge-shaped bars in H and e – Rector perfectly reflects Heimildin’s aspiration to be an incisive voice in Iceland’s media landscape. It’s also used for the logo of the supplement Menning (“Culture”), here starring its sculptural M and the defiant g. Rector is available from Production Type in a family of six weights in roman and italic. There is also Rector Display with Hairline and Outline styles.Main headlines in the print edition often feature Mānuka. This tall, compact sans was designed by Kris Sowersby, taking inspiration from old German poster types. It was released by Klim Type Foundry, alongside Mānuka Slab and an even narrower Mānuka Condensed. The serif used in the newspaper and on the website is Tiempos, by the same type designer and foundry. It appears in two of its three optical sizes, Headline and Text.Heimildin’s font stack is completed by Sanomat Sans by Commercial Type. This typeface was originally designed for another Nordic newspaper, the Finnish Helsingin Sanomat, and is part of a series that also includes Stencil and Slab variants. Heimildin makes use of its Sans Text styles optimized for small sizes.

Heimildin - Eat, drink, love – that’s the motto of Abstinence, a stylish restaurant located on La Motte-Picquet in Paris. Abstinence is the latest addition to the portfolio of Guillaume Benard’s Fitz Group, which already operates the Fitzgerald and the Vesper. According to Elodie Rouge’s review for Do It in Paris, Abstinence is distinguished by “a highly instagrammable decor”:
Here, you can disembark to flirt with your loved one or have fun in a group around a cocktail and plates to share in a glam and sophisticated atmosphere with a socialite clientele at the rendezvous.Velvet curtains, candles, banquettes and tall seats in olive or tobacco leather, vibrant playlist, impressive Sarrancolin marble bar, extraordinary glass roof that fills the place with incredible light: the tone of this singularly cool address in the 15th district is set!
This mix of cool and chic extends to the typography. While the logotype sports whimsical sans-serif caps with Art Nouveau characteristics, all other text from the menus to the website is rendered in a contemporary serif with sharp details.Abstinence’s visual identity was conceived by Abmo. The Paris-based studio led by Sonia Cordier and Dezyderiusz Gusta specializes in spectacular identities for the hospitality industry, see for example their work for Frenchie Restaurant and Hotel Sookie. For the logo, Abmo created a custom typeface: Abstinence is characterized by a high waistline and an idiosyncratic S. The font has wide caps in the uppercase and narrrower alternates in the lowercase, which get mixed via OpenType features. Keussel provided the font production. The brand typeface is Rector. Drawn by Type & Media graduate Hrvoje Živčić, it was published by Production Type in 2021, just a few months before Abstinence opened its doors. Rector often is used in all caps and big sizes, like for the three-word messages “EAT DRINK LOVE” or “OPEN ALL SUMMER”, flaunting its wedge-shaped bars and knife-like diagonals, which hint at its inspiration in stonecarving and monumental letters. Rector also appears in mixed case on the website and the printed menus, where it makes for a dignified text typeface with an unmistakable voice.Rector Medium

About this font
Its personality comes through its forms—which feel human-made and also precise. There are broad nib qualities that lean into their pixel canvas to be more regimented and fiercely pointy, keeping Rector both modern and vocal.
Rector is an inscriptional serif by Hrvoje Živčić, where you will see quite a few hints at stonecarving and monumental letters. Its core styles are both austere and graceful, just what we want for an elegant block of text. In this 16-styles family, the display styles are more eccentric, with a “quasi-sans” Hairline and a “duoline” Outline.
