Berthold
The H. Berthold type foundry was founded in 1858 by Hermann Berthold in Berlin, and developed a reputation for crafting high-quality typefaces.
To complement their development of phototypesetting equipment in the 1950s Berthold created the Berthold Exklusiv Collection, a collection of typefaces created solely for Berthold by distinguished designers. As artistic director from 1961 to 1990, Günter Gerhard Lange was responsible for the creation, meticulous production standards, and attention to quality found in each of the Berthold Exklusivs.
In 1991, under the direction of Bernd Möllenstädt, Berthold licensed over 300 of the most popular Berthold typefaces to Adobe for release in PostScript Type 1 format as part of the Adobe Type Library, but it ceased trading in 1993 due to financial difficulties.
In 1997 a Chicago-based company Berthold Types Limited published the complete Berthold Exklusiv Collection and became the exclusive source of the original Adobe versions. In 2000 Günter Gerhard Lange rejoined Berthold Types Limited as a consultant, overseeing the release of several new typefaces until his death in 2008.
In August 2022 Berthold was acquired by Monotype Imaging.
