Michael Gills

Michael Gills

Michael Gills was born in London, UK, in 1962, and at sixteen took up an apprenticeship in engineering, developing an amateur interest in type design and calligraphy somewhere along the way. In 1985, he studied Design and Print Origination for two years at Suffolk College in Ipswich.

Soon after he joined Letraset, in London, as a trainee Typeface Designer under the guidance of Colin Brignall. He stayed for seven years eventually becoming Senior Type Designer. Designs for Letraset included the Charlotte families, Gilgamesh, Fling, and Frances Uncial, amongst others.

Since then he worked primarily as a graphic/web designer until 2019 when he rekindled his love of type design with the release of Rahere Sans. This was followed by additions to the Rahere family including Rahere Roman Display, Rahere Sans Inline, and Rahere Esoteric.

He currently freelances as a graphic designer specialising in type, lettering, and calligraphy while building up ULGA Type, a small type foundry with a modest output of text and display typefaces.
