We have drawn the Vtg Stencil Diag-B 087 fonts from a Diagraph-Bradley 7/8" stencil cutting machine.
The 7/8" and ½" models were produced for a nearly 80 years with very little changes in the design of the punches (typeface).
The stencil typeface is a very low-contrast, squared sans serif design and a very bold, forward-thinking design for the early 1900s.
Of course, the punches and dies had to be as simple and inexpensive as possible, and they had to last as long as possible without wearing out.
The Vtg Stencil Diag-B 078 fonts come in three styles: Regular, Mono, and Source.
Regular is the most typographically advanced style with kerning, nicer letter proportions, even stencil bridges,
and better spacing – just the style you like to use for artwork.
The Source style covers very close the original look and feel of the original stencils and is straight monospaced.
If you prefer to use a digital font for cutting stencils, such as for props or restoration work, this is the font for you.
The best of both worlds is the Mono style.
It uses most of the advanced features of the Regular style, but it’s also straight monospaced.
Facts about the Diagraph Corporation
The Diagraph Corporation was founded on 20. August 1902 and was the second manufacturer of stencil cutting machines in the U.S. and the world.
The first Diagraph stencil machine was introduced in 1903.
The new feature were, compared to the Bradley machines, that the punches and dies could be changed by the user.
The first machines were the 7/8" and the ½" models.
In about 1912 the heavy Diagraph Jumbo with 1¾" punches followed.
In June 1938, Diagraph purchased the first stencil machine company – the Bradley Stencil Machine Co. and was renamed Diagraph-Bradlay.
Over the decades, the range of models has been expanded to include machines for additional type sizes.
Around 1982, the »Bradley« part of the company name was dropped.
In May 2001 Illinois Tool Works (ITW) acquired Diagraph.

The early Diagraph machines were available in two versions - with and wihtout housing (dial type) to be cheaper. The Jumbo model was always an open, dial type version. Some machines from the mid 1950s on are sold under supplier brands like Garvey and Universum. | ||||
